This course will be a blended learning course and will happened both virtually and in person. There is also a pre-course in water portion that will need to be completed before starting the course. The lifeguard class not only teaches an individual life saving skill but also responsibility, leadership and teamwork. Skills learned include professional rescuer CPR/AED, First Aid, water entries and approaches, removal of victims from the water and back boarding.
Pre-course
Skill #1
Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
Swim goggles are allowed.
Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
Skill #2
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
The face may be in or out of the water.
Swim goggles are not allowed.
Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
Participants who successfully complete any of our lifeguard courses will be eligible to interview for a lifeguard position with the department.

May Class
The Pre-course date will be May 2, 2026 at 11:30am at Plainfield Town Hall Pool.
Access to the virtual program will be emailed May 4, 2026 and will need to be completed by May 15, 2026 by 6pm. The online portion is about 7 hours long.
The in water portion will be May 16, 23rd, 30th from 7:00am - 2:00pm, at Plainfield Town Pool.
August Class
The Pre-course date will be July 18, 2026 at 11:30am at Plainfield Town Hall Pool.
Access to the virtual program will be emailed July 20, 2026 and will need to be completed by July 31, 2026 by 6pm. The online portion is about 7 hours long.
The in water portion will be August 1st, 8th, 15th from 7:00am - 2:00pm, at Plainfield Town Pool.
